This stuff happens a lot. Sometimes I just ignore it; sometimes it pisses me off.
There’s a Facebook group called Atheism United and, sometimes, it’s a target for people who hold to the silly position that the Bible, as they’ve been taught to understand it, is literally true and, possibly for reasons that have to do with not wanting anyone to go to Hell if it can be avoided, or, equally possibly, because they think they gain some kind of reward or status, in this world or the “next”, by “witnessing” to unbelievers, they seem to be compelled to try to push their belief onto those who don’t already share it. And where better to find unbelievers than a group called Atheism United?
Caleb Nii Addy Pure-Golden just happens to present himself as the most recent example of this sort of behaviour. What follows is the text of his most recent post in that group and of comments I made in response to that.
I don’t expect that he’ll respond to me specifically. Posters like him seldom to bother with interactions with individuals; they’re all about “the mission”, not the person. If he does, I’ll edit this entry to add such responses at the bottom (and I’ll edit these lines to indicate that such responses have been received).
Caleb posted this:
“”Then he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” – Luke 16:24
HELL IS REAL. HEAVEN IS REAL. WHEN YOU DIE, YOU DON’T STOP YOUR EXISTENCE. WHEN YOU DIE YOU’LL WIND UP IN HEAVEN OR IN HELL. AND IF YOU DON’T HAVE JESUS, YOU’LL WIND UP IN HELL. REPENT AND BE CONVERTED. COME TO JESUS CHRIST NOW !!!
My first response was this:
CALEB, IT’S A GOOD THING YOU USED ALL CAPS AND MULTIPLE EXCLAMATION POINTS!!! OTHERWISE, PEOPLE WOULD NOTICE THAT YOU’RE POSTING BULLSHIT!!!
Later, after a little more thought, I posted this:
People like Caleb Nii Addy Pure-Golden, if they’re sincere, have no idea how ridiculous and how contrary to reality are their beliefs. They really believe this crazy shit and they think that quoting the Bible at people actually counts for something. It probably has not occurred to him that a fair number of other people have figured out that the Bible is not something that a well-informed person should take seriously as a source of information about reality.
As I said in an earlier post, he is showing himself to be pathetic — a helpless victim of the preachers who brainwashed him. He didn’t have to be a religitard but somebody somewhere — a preacher? a parent? a “friend”? — was sufficiently proficient at presenting lies as if they were truths that he bought into it, probably because he came to believe that to do otherwise would mean eternal damnation.
That’s one of the things I really hate about religion: it take reasonably intelligent and well-intentioned people and convinces them that it is not only acceptable but actually virtuous to present to others ideas that are founded in primitive ignorance and outright lies and tell them that they are doomed to eternal torment if they don’t embrace these ridiculous ideas.
Most people here are, of course, very likely to see through his bullshit but it seems reasonably likely that he is spreading this same nonsense to people who might be more to be vulnerable. If so, that’s where he would cross the line from being a victim of abuse to one who perpetuates the cycle by being an abuser.
